Since that fateful evening when Black Canary was stabbed to death by Damien Darhk, we’ve been wondering if she’d live to see another day -- like Sara and Thea who were both resurrected in the Lazarus Pit. Speculation came to a rest when it was announced Laurel Lance, along with Robert and Moira Queen, would return in the 100th episode of Arrow. Now, Executive Producer Wendy Mericle has taken it a step further. She has revealed Laurel is ‘alive and well’ and will also appear in Season 5 episode 10, the midseason premiere.
“I can tell you that we’re really excited about having her back. You will see in the episodes where she appears – Episode 510 definitely, our midseason premiere. Keep your eyes out for that,” Mericle told TV Guide.
In what capacity Katie Cassidy will appear remains to be seen. She could be a version of Laurel, maybe from another Earth, who never went on to become the Black Canary. She could also be Black Siren, Black Canary’s evil alter-ego we met in The Flash Season 2. Or, she may end up being a special Flashpoint version of Laurel.
Mericle teased that Laurel’s appearance is Flashpoint-related, which means maybe Barry going back in time not only brought his mother back to life, but Laurel as well. However, Laurel simply coming back would rival statements from Stephen Amell and the producers who said last year there’s no chance Laurel could just return from the dead.
“We’re so excited about getting to work with her again and her willingness to come back. It’s one of the fun parts of the show. People can leave and get killed and you can still find new and crazy ways for them to come back. I can definitely tell you that there’s a way we’re going to bring her back and she’s going to be alive and well. And Flashpoint might have a little bit to do with that.”
More information about how Laurel will reappear in the series could come with the revelation of the promise Oliver made to her before she died . We’ll find out what that promise is in the Arrow Season 5 premiere. Katie Cassidy has also been cast as a series regular across all four DC TV shows -- Arrow, The Flash, Legends and Supergirl -- so her return must mean big changes to her original character.
Arrow returns Oct. 5.
