Civilization 6, one of the most anticipated games releases of the fall, is coming out on Oct. 21—on PC. The big question, as is often the case for major PC game releases, is whether and when the game is coming out on Mac. Luckily, although we don’t know the exact Civ 6 Mac release date yet, we do know the game is coming to Macs. This past week, we also learned even more—the developer behind the port, and the game’s system requirements. Let’s hope the release date announcement isn’t far behind.
Civilization 6 Mac Release Date: All The Details Except The Date
We’ve known for months that Civilization 6 was getting a Mac port, which is hardly surprising: Mac gaming is far more vibrant now than it was ten years ago and every Civilization game has come out on Mac. Just last week, though, the venerable Mac developer Aspyr confirmed that—as widely expected— it was doing the Civ 6 Mac port. That’s great news; Aspyr also did the port for Civ V and its expansions, so the company certainly knows what it’s doing. The company also released the minimum (but not yet the recommended) system requirements for the game on Mac:
Minimum System Requirements
- Operating System: MacOS 10.11 (El Capitan)
- CPU Processor: Intel Core i5 (4 cores)
- CPU Speed: 2.3 GHz
- Memory: 6 GB
- Hard Disk Space: 15 GB
- Video Card (ATI): Radeon HD 6790
- Video Card (NVIDIA): GeForce 650M
- Video Card (Intel): Iris Pro
- Video Memory (VRam): 1 GB
- Peripherals: Macintosh mouse and keyboard, Steam Controller (optional)
Aspyr has an official FAQ up about Civilization 6 Mac as well and it’s worth a quick read. But here’s the question you probably care about:
Q: When will Civilization VI be released?
A: We are working to get Civilization VI out on Mac as soon as possible and we hope to get it to Mac fans on the same day the PC is released. However, we are still working on finalizing the game and cannot confirm our final launch date. We will confirm the launch date with the community as soon as we have it finalized.
A few other highlights: Yes, there will be cross-platform play after the first major patch comes out, as long as both versions of synced up on updates (which won’t be all the time, since the PC version gets patches first). A Linux version is still being evaluated. And there will be Mac DLC down the road.
It’s all good news, but the most tantalizing tidbit, of course, would be the Civ 6 Mac release date. Alas, it sounds like Aspyr doesn’t even have it yet— but we can still hope we get the game in 2016.
