On Grey’s Anatomy Season 13 episode 19, which airs at 8 p.m. EDT, Maggie has returned to work after the death of her mother, Diane. Her first surgery is a risky open-heart surgery on a baby.
At first, Maggie is confident about her ability to perform the surgery. However, as more of her colleagues and friends ask her if she is okay to be performing surgery so soon after her mother’s death, her certainty begins to waver.
Diane passed away in episode 18, after battling breast cancer. At first, Maggie believed her mother was working with Jackson (who is a plastic surgeon) to get breast augmentation. However, he diagnosed her with cancer. For a time, Diane kept her cancer a secret from Maggie.
As a doctor, Maggie tried to do what she could to save her mother, including entering her in a clinical trial with questionable results. Ultimately, Diane succumbed to her cancer, likely as a result of all of the rigorous treatments. Maggie was with her when she died.
An episode 19 sneak peek shows Maggie’s sisters, Meredith and Amelia, asking her if she’s okay to return to work. Maggie is upset that people around her are not being more supportive. However, Maggie freezes during the surgery, while the patient is in distress. It could be detrimental to the patient and Dr. Riggs may have to take over.
Will Maggie be able to finish this risky surgery? We will find out during Grey's Anatomy Season 13 episode 19, "What's Inside," which is best viewed on television or live online through ABC Live.
