In Season 3 of Netflix’s Orange is the New Black, fans were surprised to see a twist in the story arc between Daya (Dascha Polanco) and corrections officer John Bennett (Matt McGorry). After a proposal and a pregnancy, “good guy” Bennett bolted leaving Daya and his unborn baby girl behind.
For fans of Daya and Bennett, one of the biggest questions for Season 4 is if there is any hope for reconciliation between the two.
“I would love to see that, but you have to be realistic,” said Polanco to Entertainment Weekly. “He walked out of her life and her main priority right now is figuring out how she can take care of her child.”
What's going on with Bennett? Well, he's not dead. During the 2015 Television Critics Association (TCA) press tour, McGorry addressed his character's departure with Extra, confirming that he could be back. “I think it’s always possible. He’s not dead – as far as I know,” said McGorry.
Netflix has released promos and trailers for the new season, which have not hinted at McGorry’s return or shown the character.
By the end of Season 3, Daya has given birth to a baby girl, who is being raised by her mother’s boyfriend after she went back and forth about whether she should let Mendez’s mother adopt her child. Unbeknownst to Daya, her daughter’s guardian is being arrested in the end of the final episode, suggesting that her daughter’s fate is to end up in child services.
As for Daya reuniting with her daughter, the future remains murky. “I have no idea. When you’re in jail, you have no control over your situation,” said Polanco. “It just gets more and more difficult for her.”
Orange is the New Black Season 4 releases on Netflix on June 17.
