In season 3, Corrections Officer John Bennett (Matt McGorry) ran away from his obligations to his pregnant fiance Daya (Dascha Polanco) and their then unborn daughter. The John-Daya love story was a fan favorite and it was a shock to see the “good guy” run off like that.
ScreenCrush is reporting that McGorry’s name is not included in the list of cast members for the new season. In a previous interview, Polanco was skeptical about Bennett’s return citing that a reconciliation is not realistic.
“I would love to see that, but you have to be realistic,” said Polanco to Entertainment Weekly. “He walked out of her life and her main priority right now is figuring out how she can take care of her child.”
Polanco also told Bustle: "Bennett coming back? Who knows! When a man leaves you, can we ever tell if they're coming back or not? We never know."
The series did not show what Bennett was doing or where he ended up, leaving his character’s life and death up in the air. But McGorry talked about his character’s fate with Extra at the 2015 Television Critics Association (TCA) press tour.
“I think it’s always possible. He’s not dead – as far as I know,” said McGorry.
In the final few minutes of season 4, fans saw Aleida's boyfriend Caesar get arrested and Daya’s daughter getting taken away. Could this bring Bennett back, assuming he knows he is a father?
Orange is the New Black season 4 airs on June 27.
