The latest event in Pokémon Go is reportedly more than a chance to catch more Water-type Pokémon. According to reports from players, Shiny Magikarp and Shiny Gyarados are in the game.

The Pokémon Company and Niantic did not make any official announcements regarding the inclusion of these two Shiny Pokémon, so screenshots of these captures are all there is to go on. We are currently looking into this ourselves and if we find anything, we will update.

According to the aforementioned screenshots, there is no symbol on the Pokémon’s page that indicate it is a Shiny Pokémon, but both Shiny Magikarp and Shiny Gyarados are noticeably different from their normal coloring.

Some Pokémon’s Shiny versions are way more subtle, so hopefully Niantic adds a Shiny symbol in the future.

Shiny Magikarp and Shiny Gyarados would mark the first time shiny variations of Pokémon are included in Pokémon Go. While Shiny Pokémon are purely aesthetic and don’t possess any advantage in battle, their rarity makes them highly valuable.

But why Magikarp and Gyarados? With the implementation of the Gen 2/Johto Region Pokémon, it’s a nice nod to the first Gen 2 games, Gold and Silver, and the Shiny Red Gyarados found in Lake of Rage.

The Red Gyarados is the first Shiny Pokémon in any Pokémon game, so it makes sense that the Magikarp line be the first in Pokémon Go.

The current Pokémon Go event, the Water Festival, runs from March 22 to March 29 at 4 p.m. EST.

Have you had any luck with catching a Shiny Magikarp or Shiny Gyarados? Let us know in the comments section below.
