Star Wars Battlefront 2 is in the works at DICE EA

The final DLC pack for Star Wars Battlefront has just released and DICE is already talking about Battlefront 2. While we know the game is coming, and probably coming next year, we don’t have many more details than that.

In an interview with Eurogamer, DICE producer Paul Keslin mentioned the developers were aware of the mixed reception Battlefront has had, and says the company is looking to address the complaints with the sequel. "We've been listening to a lot of the feedback since launch and even post-launch as we've been adding new things,” he said. “We've announced the next game that's coming out - those are things we're look to tackle in the future. We can't always get everything in the current game, but in the future we want to hit those things and give the fans what they're after."

Those things the fans are after include seamless land to space combat, a way for Battlefront to expand post-launch without dividing the community and a good campaign. The issues with the seamless land to space combat right now are technological ones.

"We're getting there with some things - it really depends on how giant the world is what some of our goals are. Some of the limitations are that there's a lot of stuff to throw on screen,” Keslin told Eurogamer. “We're trying to lock everything into 60fps, with all this water and vegetation - since our game is so visually authentic, it's very taxing. I can't speak right now for what the team might be working on, what that might look like in a seamless world. I can say we haven't focussed on that as of yet. But maybe!"

As for a campaign, DICE wants to ensure the gameplay is as fun as what you’d find in multiplayer. “We want everything to feel like a coherent experience. We don't want it where single player isn't that great but multiplayer has this great thing and isn't connected,” said Kelsin.

In terms of a Season Pass for Battlefront 2, DICE hasn’t decided how to approach the situation. "We explore a lot of business models, and there's a lot of thinking around that. For us - more as EA as a company - we throw out the term ‘player first’ a lot. And what does it mean for games as living experiences over time,” Kelsin said.

“To your point - season pass is just content drops. But you've seen we're starting to do things like having events more often, trying to do things that actively engage you on a daily or weekly basis. We're giving a lot more thought in that area, and how can that evolve what we've done in the past. I can't guarantee one way or another now, but it's something we're thinking about."

Kelsin also talked about ideas for where Battlefront 2 will take place, seeing as how major planets like Hoth and Endor have already been used. Outside of the ideas of the new Star Wars movies, there are other locations in the extended universe that could be used. "I could see from a commercial standpoint that it makes sense - there are new movies coming out, hitch yourself to that star," said Kelsin. "There are always opportunities to look backwards - there are TV shows, comic books. A lot of us at the studio watch Rebels, a lot of us read the comics. Who know where we'll go? Well, some people know, obviously."

That may not be much information about what Star Wars Battlefront 2 will be like, but it certainly is some good information on where DICE is headed and what they are thinking of. Hopefully the company can figure out some new tricks to get seamless gameplay working, incorporate that into a killer campaign, and sprinkle on a reasonable Season Pass as a cherry on the top.
