The Witcher developer CD Projekt RED has confirmed plans to develop a second major game alongside Cyberpunk 2077. This news comes from NeoGAF user boskee who posted notes from an investors call the company recently hosted.
Despite teasing that there is a second game in development, CD Projekt RED managed to keep quiet about the project after that. The game will be a AAA RPG however, as confirmed on the company’s website, and is scheduled to release somewhere between 2017 and 2021.
We also know that CD Projekt RED is finished with Geralt’s story from The Witcher trilogy, and those sentiments were reflected again in the call. However, this doesn’t mean that CD Projekt RED is done with the universe of The Witcher. CEO Marcin Kiciński said, “We like that [Witcher] world very much. We have invested 15 years of our lives and loads of money into it and we will probably think about it at some point... We have invested enormous funds into promoting it, and it's a very strong brand. Answer your own question.”
This isn’t the first time we’ve heard CD Projekt RED tease a return to the world of The Witcher. “ The Witcher universe is a very big place with a lot of NPCs, a lot of characters, a lot of places we haven’t shown yet,” Senior Writer Jakub Szamałek told IGN back in 2015, when asked about what’s next for the franchise now that The Witcher 3 is done. “So, we might return to it at some point… but we think that this is a good place to let Geralt enjoy his retirement and try something new."
As for what CD Projekt RED plans on doing next, Gwent is the major focus of 2017. We know the PS4 beta will be open to the public this weekend, with a release on Xbox One planned as well. As for Cyberpunk 2077, don’t be surprised if we don’t hear about this until next year. More development time seems like it is needed, and CD Projekt RED will probably keep things close to the chest until everything is ready.
