Borderlands 3 is getting ready for its official launch on September 13, which is only a little over a month from today, but it seems developer Gearbox Software couldn't wait to give us a new detail on what to expect from the game. In an interview with Gearbox executive Scott Velasquez which was posted on the PlayStation Blog, it was revealed that Borderlands 3 on the PS4 Pro will be offering graphics-flexibility like what one would expect on PC.
According to Velasquez, Borderlands 3 on the PS4 Pro will give players a new setting called "Graphics Preference". The Graphics Preference option allows players to choose between Favor Resolution and Favor Performance. When Favor Resolution is selected, the game's graphics will be adjusted to run at the highest possible graphics settings - usually 4K Ultra HD - with the framerate capped at 30 fps. On the other hand, when Favor Performance is selected, the game will run at 1080p resolution with the framerate capped at 60 fps.
However, Velasquez does note that even at 1080p, the game still looks terrific on the PS4 Pro, thanks to the console's integrated supersampling. With the fast-paced gameplay that one might expect out of Borderlands 3, and the top-notch graphics quality of 1080p at 60 fps, Velasquez expects that "Favor Performance" will be the go-to setting for most players. Favor Resolution, therefore, is probably a nod to the graphics buffs who want the ultimate cinematic Borderlands 3 experience.
While not as robust as the graphics options you would get on PC, the fact that Borderlands 3 offers graphics customization on the PS4 Pro is an achievement in and of itself. While the power gap between PCs and consoles have always been a little far and a little wide, it seems that consoles aren't too far behind anymore, especially when you're talking about the PS4 Pro. Of course, Velasquez did mention all of this in an interview with the PlayStation Blog, but considering the fact that Borderlands 3 will also be releasing for the technically superior (at least hardware-wise) Xbox One X, we can probably expect to see this features on other top-of-the-line consoles as well.
Apart from the "Graphics Preference" setting, it was also mentioned that Borderlands 3 on the PS4 Pro will have many of the highly-sought after bells and whistles of high-end gaming, including 4K Support and HDR output.
