Lego Marvel Superheroes 2 will bring the largest roster of Marvel characters into one game this November, and that roster has expanded at SDCC after the announcement of several new characters.
Gwenpool, Cosmo from Guardians of the Galaxy, Throg and a ton of other Marvel heroes and villains were all announced at the Lego Marvel Superheroes 2 panel. But before we get into that, the Lego Marvel Superheroes 2 and Lego team were in attendance to talk about the story and a bunch of cool tidbits from the game.
The story of Lego Marvel Superheroes 2 takes place right after the end of the first game. The Guardians of the Galaxy have come to Earth to warn the heroes of a bigger threat: Kang the Conqueror.
In the eyes of the development team, Kang is the greatest Avengers villain and the story is very influenced by two Kang-related Avengers stories called “Avengers Forever” and the “Kang Dynasty” - both written by Kurt Busiek.
So when trying to come up with someone who knows the character of Kang to write the script for the game, TT Games Lead Designer Arthur Parsons suggested to Marvel Games president Bill Rosemann that they just ask Kurt to do it. He immediately accepted the job.
Busiek explained that Kang’s motivations are the same from the comics, to prove that he’s the best by defeating the best i.e. the Marvel Superheroes. He’s amassed armies from all across time (vikings, pirates etc.) to fight the superheroes on Chronopolis, a city made up of places from across time and space.
Some of the locations revealed were Wakanda, Xandar, Manhattan 2099, Medieval England, the Wild West and much more. And with those locations come new characters that will make up the 200-plus member roster.
A new Kang-focused trailer shown at the panel has Kang narrating what he plans to do and shows the different Marvel Superheroes traveling and fighting in different areas. But there are some character reveals in this trailer that may or may not have been intentional. For example, Revona.
Fans of the comics know that Revona and Kang have a complicated history and that doesn’t change in Lego Marvel Superheroes 2.
“Revona is one of the reasons Kang is a great character,” Busiek said at the panel. “He was conquering the kingdom she was princess of and fell in love with her. I won’t conquer your kingdom and kill your father if you marry me. She declined and said that they fight to the death and that’s when Kang knew she was the woman for him.”
Of course, fans who know both characters may know where their characters arcs go and the team revealed that a lot of that is in the Superheroes 2 story.
As for the rest of the character reveals, this is the list of characters shown via slides.
Vulture ( Spider-Man: Homecoming version)
Doctor Octopus
Cosmo
Greenskyn Smashtroll the Medieval English Hulk
Throg
Forbush Man
Howard the Duck (Iron Duck)
Gwenpool
There are 10 bonus Gwenpool missions that players can complete. One of these missions is a story of Howard the Duck and Forbush Man trying to sneak into Chrono-Con to help Howard pitch a video game idea.
