Skate 4 is still just a hope and a dream for many, but a new clue has fueled the hype flames. Not only that, but there are rumblings from skateboard legend Tony Hawk about a new game in the works. Could this all be related? Let’s figure it out.
First, the Skate 4 tease. Daniel Lingen, the senior community engagement manager at EA, tweeted “#skate4.” Obviously this is far from proof that EA is making a new skateboarding game, but at least shows someone in a senior position at EA is aware of all the demand for a new Skate.
So what about Tony Hawk? The latest Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater game was an embarrassment for all involved, and Hawk’s relationship with Activision is officially dead. In a recent interview with Jenkem Magazine, Hawk mentioned a new game was in the works, but it’s still in the very early stages right now.
When asked about a new game, Hawk replied, “I’m potentially working on something but it’s so early I couldn’t talk about it. I don’t have any contracts signed but it’s exciting,” he said. “I feel like it’s with the right people so I should know more in the next couple months.”
It’s important to note that a new Skate and a new Tony Hawk can still live side by side. NFL Blitz and Madden can coexist as well. Just because both games feature skateboarding doesn’t mean they scratch the same itch. That being said, getting Tony Hawk in a Skate game does seem like it would be the best of both worlds.
It sounds like Hawk is definitely working on something. With the right developers, a revamped Tony Hawk that plays and feels like the originals would be amazing. As for EA and Skate 4, don’t hold your breath. A tweet from an employee could just be personal support for wanting the game to be real, not a tease from someone in the know.
Regardless of any of these rumors, the fact of the matter is gamers want more skateboarding video games (that aren’t complete trash like THPS5). As it stands right now, all we have to look forward to are a mobile game and an indie game, both currently in development.
