FATAL FRAME: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse is now available digitally on PC through Steam, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. This is a remake of the original game which was released in 2008 exclusively in Japan on Nintendo Wii.
The release of this version means that the game is now playable in North America on PC and various consoles.
Mystery on the Island
The game tells the story of five girls who mysteriously disappeared during a moonlight festival on an island in southern Japan known as Rogetsu Isle. While the girls were rescued, they have no memories of what happened. They only have a faint remembrance of a single melody and what seems to be a possessed masked woman dancing in the moonlight.
Ten years later, two of the five girls died. The remaining three girls, Ruka Minazuki, Misaki Aso and Madoka Tsukimori, decide to head back to the island and solve the enigmatic deaths and unlock the mystery of the memories left behind.
Solving the Mystery
While on the island, the girls get to explore western-style mansions as well as abandoned hospitals. However, in searching for clues, they’ll have to rely on a faint flashlight and the moonlight. The story moves forward by players discovering various relics like old newspaper articles and notes.
The Camera Obscura
As the girls explore the island, they’ll be confronted by spirits. To fight against these vengeful ghosts, the girls must use a Fatal Frame franchise classic which is the Camera Obscura. The girls can defeat the ghosts by taking a photograph of them which seals their power. Throughout the game, the spirits become more powerful and that means the girls need to equip stronger lenses and change out different films. The camera can also be used to find evidence for the girls to recover their memories.
New Features
For the remastered version, fans can enjoy the new Photo Mode along with new and altered costumes, plus improved rendering of shadows and light and other graphical upgrades. In addition, the character models and in-game movies have been enhanced to offer a story which shines not only narratively but also aesthetically.
