Five Nights At Freddy’s movie news was teased in September, and franchise creator Scott Cawthon has just revealed the project is “back at square one” after many months of planning. A recent Steam Community post details the film’s issues.
“The reality is that last year the FNaF movie was met with several delays and roadblocks,” he said, “some involving problems within the movie industry as a whole.” He further confirms that “as of right now, the movie is back at square one.”
While Fazbear fanatics shouldn’t expect a trailer anytime soon, development is ongoing. Cawthon insists that “I want to make sure that the right movie gets made, and things are on track right now for that to happen.” He also says that, unlike the original incarnation, he wants to be involved with the creative process from day one. “I want this movie to be something that I'm excited for the fanbase to see,” he assured.
When the Five Nights At Freddy’s movie first came to fruition, it was planned for production at Warner Bros. with assistance from 2015’s Poltergeist remake director Gil Kenan. In fact, throughout 2015, Kenan himself posted several pictures of what appeared to be animatronic mockups for the film. Since neither Warner Bros. nor Kenan are mentioned in Cawthon’s post, it’s unclear if that relationship still exists.
This news also makes us wonder if the film will release at all. Just like the announced Uncharted and Last Of Us adaptations before it, this movie could easily fall behind to the point that it’s never finished. Video game projects in Hollywood are especially notorious for that kind of treatment.
There are a few things for fans to look forward to while they wait for the movie, though. The Five Nights At Freddy’s: Sister Location game was released last October, and the ScottGames website is currently blank in preparation for the next big tease. A novel, called Five Nights At Freddy’s: The Twisted Ones, is also planned for release at the end of June.
