The BBC’s Sherlock is in production mode for Season 4 of the cult favorite series. Amidst filming, actor Toby Jones has been cast to play a mystery villain in the series. Jones was most recently seen portraying a scientist on FOX’s Wayward Pines.
“I'm excited and intrigued by the character I shall be playing in Sherlock," Jones said in a PBS press release.
Jones will reportedly appear in Season 4 episode 2, directed by Nick Hurran. He will be joining returning cast members Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, alongside Amanda Abbington, Una Stubbs, Rupert Graves, Jonathan Aris and Louise Brealey.
"We're thrilled to welcome one of our finest actors to the Sherlock family," said co-creator Mark Gatiss, who also plays Mycroft Holmes. "I know Toby will embrace the part with true relish!" Co-creator Steven Moffat added: "Delighted to have Toby Jones on board, bringing to life one of Doyle’s finest villains.”
With no news yet on which Arthur Conan Doyle villain Jones will be portraying, it is possible that the actor will portray a new villain or somehow be involved with the Moriarty (Andrew Scott) story arc. “All I can say is, this is a major, life-changing series for the regulars," said Gatiss to Entertainment Weekly about the Moriarty plot. "The repercussions of Moriarty’s apparent return are far-reaching. It’s very big stuff.”
Little has been revealed about Season 4 but Gatiss and Moffat issued a press release about the new season in April. “ Sherlock [Season] four—here we go again!” they said. “Whatever else we do, wherever we all go, all roads lead back to Baker Street—and it always feels like coming home. Ghosts of the past are rising in the lives of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson bringing adventure, romance and terror in their wake.”
